ABSTRACT
Normally textbooks and works of popular science are not regarded as part of the literature; but the reference book is very important. Scientists generally consult books, whereas historians and philosophers read them right through; and works which give the latest atomic weights or the melting points of derivatives of organic compounds are very useful to the researcher. He will also be able to look up standard methods of preparation, useful formulae, and values for physical constants.
