ABSTRACT
Phylogenically, the oldest oculomotor mechanism is the reflex which acts to hold the gaze steady despite movements of the head. Investigation of this reflex shows that there must exist a neural circuit which converts eye velocity to eye position, and this circuit is also involved in the control of voluntary changes in gaze direction.
