ABSTRACT

This conclusion presents some closing thoughts on the key concepts discussed in the preceding chapters of this book. The book presents the elements of the relationship between OPEC and the ldcs. It begins by tracing the history of Arab involvement in African diplomacy, beginning with the initiatives following from President Gamal Nasser's new relationship with the Soviet Union. It then discusses the tensions which this involvement underwent in the 1960s and then in the 1970s as a result of the higher oil prices set by OPEC and goes on to assess the differences between OPEC members' interests. The book deals with trade between OPEC states and ldcs was the dominance of a dozen or so exporting countries in this relationship. It indicates the rapid growth of OPEC aid, its volume and institutions, and discusses the relaxation of its initial regional concentration.
