ABSTRACT

This chapter focuses on select fundamental aspects of college developmental reading. The metaphorical frame of terrain is used to convey the breadth and depth of those fundamental aspects. The chapter reviews three terrains of college reading: the foundational terrain, the theoretical terrain, and the instructional terrain. The unique positioning of college developmental reading within institutions of higher education offers potential for impacting a large number of postsecondary learners. The chapter discusses these considerations, including implications and further research recommendations. It refers the primary research and early discussion of pertinent topics that span the breadth of scholarship on college reading. Effective reading instruction is not a monolithic concept, however, and there is a host of important elements to consider when implementing classroom practice.
