ABSTRACT

Wiggins’s ‘D’ theory is a subtle and complex attempt to elucidate the pre-theoretical concepts of identity and individuation. The focus of this chapter is to demonstrate how he develops his account by examining both concepts in tandem. The reading offered here is contrasted with the interpretation given by Paul Snowdon, and it is argued that Snowdon misunderstands Wiggins’s use of ‘individuation’ and the ‘systematic’ aspect of his philosophical methodology.
