ABSTRACT
In this chapter it is argued that Wiggins has a novel form of biological reductionism at his disposal: a generative alternative to the emergentist’s position. Where reductionists and emergentists focus on causal dependence to guide their metaphysics, Wiggins focuses on ontological dependence. This reading of Wiggins is presented in conjunction with an analysis of Aristotle’s hylomorphism.
