ABSTRACT

This chapter focuses on coaching in Thailand. It presents information on the relationship between Thai culture and executive coaching in Thailand. Culture is the collection of values, learned beliefs and behavioural dictates that are shared within a group of people that is self-sustaining and transfers these paradigms from generation to generation. A culture may include shared language, folklore, ideas, thinking patterns, concepts held in common, communication styles and accepted 'truths' held sacred by members of the group. In addition, members of a culture have similar expectations of life itself. The chapter also focuses on how to conduct coaching taking into consideration the culture and on building on what is possible. Putting assumptions, cultural norms and expectations on the table helps open up the conversation to go to deeper and more authentic level. Thailand is in early stages of development when it comes to coaching; however, with experienced coaches who understand and utilize cultural sensitivities, leaders will be successfully developed.
