ABSTRACT

What drives change in the macroeconomic and political environment and how can one turn these changes into strategic advantage? This chapter attempts to identify change drivers in the macroeconomic and sociopolitical context and, drawing from rich case studies across Africa, provides managers and leaders in public, private, and social enterprise sectors of African economies tools for systematic appraisal of these factors and for piloting transition organizations to deliver superior performance. It makes the case for a distinctive African approach to managing change which recognizes factors such as weak institutions, a ubiquitous state, dominance of politicians in the economy, and a clash between traditional and new ways of doing things.
