ABSTRACT
An eye fixation in reading is the period of time during which the visual system is exposed to the text stimulus array. This paper discusses issues concerning the nature of visual attention as it occurs during these fixations, including: (1) what is attended; (2) the time of attending; and (3) the basis for selecting a location to attend on a new fixation. An integrative overview of visual attention during fixations in reading is suggested.
