ABSTRACT

Architects can greatly improve occupant experience by knowing how to extract from nature and integrate it at just the right times within an architectural design. Emerging technology that factors for the human senses can integrate into architecture to enhance an environment, helping it to become more humane, healthy, and motivating for occupants. Nature is a magnificent resource which architects can maximize as they design healing environments. Architects can learn from nature–by bringing its healing qualities into their own designs. To best explain such healing qualities of nature, it is important to understand the powerful features of healing gardens. Technology should not become a barrier between building occupants and nature. Instead, technology should enhance buildings to serve as a bridge that tunes between them. Adaptive architecture should filter in the right aspects of nature at the right times to help occupants reach their goals, like better health or increased productivity.
