ABSTRACT

Dynamic architecture must happen in a guided fashion, where its designers understand occupant engagement–from their milestones to their goals. To achieve spatial fluidity, architecture should provide for an orchestrated series of actions within its space. The reason why architectural transience is so important to achieve is because with it greater functionality can be obtained. There is a diminishing value given to the other senses as most design leans toward creating and experiencing buildings not synchronized with them. In design, such visual bias blocks a holistic approach which limits the full beneficial effects an environment can have upon its occupants. By understanding the side effects of building technology designers can push for better functionality. The reason that architectural technology is not fully flexible is that it often has one state instead of a spectrum of in-between states. Unfortunately, building technology can also make certain tasks repetitive. This is partly because communication between architecture and occupant is limited.
