ABSTRACT

Architecture becomes a series of multi-sensory actions and events which help an occupant to take a next step, change an old habit, or start a new one. Because of this, environmental variation is key as it provides choice through a range of architectural behaviors that respond to occupant interactions. It is important to note that the interaction between adaptive architecture and occupants is dynamic. It becomes a collaboration. As an occupant's journey through an adaptive architecture unfolds, it is the two-way dialogue between environment and occupant that propels each to become better–to learn from each interaction. Adaptive architecture's ability to alter itself in response to its occupant can have significant impact for that occupant. Once designers understand how particular combinations of environmental stimuli impact occupants both physiologically and perceptually, architectural experience will affect occupants more positively–helping them to live healthier and happier.
