ABSTRACT

This chapter explores the role of some of the basic advisory bodies inherent in most colleges and universities, as well as the influence of campus-wide forums and university foundations in internal governance questions. It addresses the faculty's role in shared governance through the lens of the faculty senate and the curriculum committees, and then transitions into a discussion of other functional groups, such as space and facilities committees, planning and budget committees, and athletics committees, along with the impact of personal and professional decision processes within those contexts. The chapter then examines the internal role played by external university foundations, legally separate entities, yet integral to internal operations, and briefly discusses the benefit of campus-wide forums in terms of the dissemination of information to the campus community and the opportunity for robust discourse. Strategic planning has become increasingly prominent in higher education as a more nuanced approach to long-term planning.
