ABSTRACT

On July 8, 2016, Yvonne Rogers, Christopher Frauenberger, and Chris Quintana engaged in a cross-continental conversation via Skype about the challenges and opportunities facing both designers and learning scientists as they strive to integrate participatory design approaches into their projects. Yvonne Rogers is a human-computer interaction (HCI) researcher whose work has contributed to the development of new theories and revolutionary methodologies. Christopher Frauenberger is also an HCI researcher, but his work has focused primarily on the design of technologies with and for autistic children. Chris Quintana is both an HCI designer and an education researcher who has led the development and evaluation of software tools and frameworks that promote the scientific inquiry practices of middle school students. Moderated by Elizabeth 'Beth' Bonsignore, they explored personal vignettes of participatory design and its relation to learning, and potential of participatory design methods when designing for learning.
