ABSTRACT

This chapter demonstrates the usefulness of the topic of proportions. The students' initial motivation of finding the usefulness of the topic should be clear. Even students who achieve high grades in mathematics tend to question its usefulness. Although logical thinking that develops during the study of mathematics should be enough to demonstrate its usefulness, this aspect of the subject still comes into question despite the fact that many students have not even selected a career path. Where possible, teachers should select mathematical applications as lesson motivators that come from the students' set of experiences. They could range from percent considerations such as price increases on previously discounted items, or examples from sports statistics, best routes for students to take from school to home, and so on. It is also possible that family members of various students in the class have interesting occupations that lend themselves to mathematical applications.
