ABSTRACT

This chapter presents some stories from the history of mathematics and other related experiences that can be used as a motivational device for an effective instructional experience. In exploring the history of mathematics, one encounters stories and anecdotes which are both amusing and interesting and consequently worth retelling. A teacher who succeeds in selecting the right story at the right time, presented in the right tone with proper length, has an excellent chance to awaken the students' interest in preparation for the ensuing lesson. Through such stories, mathematical equations, formulas, and symbols take on a different meaning than the mere visual. In some cases, mathematicians labor their entire lives and involve others to reach a solution or to understand a mathematical concept properly. Archimedes is considered to be one of the greatest mathematicians of all time. There are many interesting stories about historical figures and episodes in the history of mathematics.
