ABSTRACT
The sociological analysis of emotions introduced concepts such as emotional labor and feeling norms to understand the social construction of emotions in diverse contexts. Dynamics of Contention offers a bold, cohesive, relational alternative to previous theorizing, while Passionate Politics provides a sprawling, multifaceted, wide-ranging exploration of how culture in general and emotion in particular shape collective action. The contentious politics agenda represents a potential paradigm shift in social movement theory. Advocates of the contentious dynamics paradigm acknowledge that emotions accompany such activities but have been reluctant to accord them analytical or explanatory significance. James Jasper's work is thus among the most far-reaching of many attempts to restore a cultural dimension to the study of collective action and to explore the implications for prevailing paradigms and familiar concepts. The mechanisms detailed by the contentious politics paradigm remain primarily structural or relational, occasionally acknowledging framing and attribution while ignoring emotions.
