ABSTRACT

The Structural ritualization theory (SRT) focuses on the role that ritual dynamics play in the creation and reproduction of social actions and social organization in groups embedded within a larger social milieu. According to the theory, certain elements play a major role in the ritualization processes that produce behaviours, interaction patterns, and structures similar to or different from those taking place in the larger social environment. As important as the reproduction of rituals and social structure is, it is also possible that ritual dynamics involve innovative processes by which new social arrangements may be created. The first process is termed "reproductive structural ritualization" and the second one, which is concerned with changes in ritual practices and structures, is referred to as "transformative structural ritualization". The role of organized groups or social organizations in ritual dynamics and transmission is also extremely important. All of these social mechanisms and conditions are relevant to study of ritual transmission and ritual dynamics more generally.
