Fundamentally, modern humanity is a single, interdependent, crowded, worldwide, heavily armed species and, as such, must learn to live together with minimal hatred and violence. Today violence is more lethal and pervasive than ever before; for some, killing has become a way of life, and hatred is taught to young and old as the organizing principle for their society. Clearly, humans have a genetic base for ease of learning of aggression. It is equally true, however, that humans also have a genetic base for ease of learning of prosocial, empathic, and affiliative behaviors. Nonetheless, too little has been done to educate children and adults about constructive, humane, and peaceful ways to live together.
