Since the time of the original publication of this book, several developments have continued the progress noted at the conclusion of the previous chapter.

Preventive Diplomacy: Kofi Annan’s Inspiring Example in Kenya, 2008

Kofi Annan’s forty-one-day mediation marathon in Kenya in early 2008 rescued both the country and its surrounding region from catastrophe, and it vividly demonstrated the need to employ preventive diplomacy at an early stage of conflict.1 Annan not only created peace out of violence, he also turned a crisis into an opportunity to get a troubled nation to deal in depth with problems that had been festering beneath a seemingly placid surface.
