ABSTRACT

Biopolitics refers to a form of politics in which the production and management of life dominates. We live at a time in which not just nature but life itself can be made and manipulated like information, patented, and owned. Genetics allows scientists to merge species, while the biological integration of animals, humans, and machines has become increasingly possible. The Enlightenment dream of the mastery of nature through the use of science and technology has been integral to capitalist accumulation, and together these projects, unrivaled in history, have made possible comforts, luxuries, and security for vast numbers of people. Yet the technical domination of nature and profit-seeking also produce ecological devastation, poverty, desperation, and dire human insecurity for

half of the planet’s population and the possibility of global nuclear annihilation under nuclear fallout.
