ABSTRACT

Caldicott, a pediatrician, was and still is one of the most visible women in the antinuclear movement. The National Committee of the Freeze was committed to diversity of representation and adopted several policies to ensure equal inclusion of women in the national leadership. Women who have played key roles during Peace Action's first 50 years follow in the footsteps of many women in this country who have publicly advocated for peace at least since the 19th century. During this period there was a significant overlap between women's peace advocacy and the movement for women's right to vote. While some women's peace advocacy efforts emphasized the traditional role of women as nurturers, others focused on the right of women to have a say on issues of war and peace. The social worker and reformer Jane Addams also helped found the Women's International League for Peace and Freedom (WILPF).
