ABSTRACT

An old friend and neighbor described endless hours spent with Jack in Northport and how Jack was constantly trying to deal with the chaos of unwanted stardom and the sense of betrayal he felt from some of his old friends. Smith and other residents of Northport who had been Jack's friends reminisced about the Northport years. Adira and many of her friends the author met through her and his other two kids, Alana and Adam, were part of a new generation that related to Jack's work in a fresh and personal way. The author told George Wallace and the audience what Jack had told me when he decided to buy a house with the money he had received from On the Road, and move to Northport. They dug every precious moment of life. The author does not know how you and Jack did it way back then, said John. The common spirit they shared with Jack was enriching and nurturing.
