ABSTRACT

This chapter enables participants to recognize the importance of decision-making about family matters and the diversity of choices women can make and also recognizes situations in their communities where women's human rights in the family are being violated. It discusses the role that governments, community leaders, and women themselves could play in protecting and promoting women's human rights in the family. The chapter then defines the public-private split and examines women's concerns in the context of the debate. It further develops ways to promote women's human rights in the family and in the community. The Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR) emphasizes the importance of the family, proclaiming that the family is the natural and fundamental group unit of society and is entitled to protection by society and the State. Yet it is within the bounds of the essential social unit that many women experience the greatest limitation of their human rights.
