ABSTRACT

This chapter enable participants to define the right to an adequate standard of living. It explains the importance of the rights to food, clean water, adequate housing, clothing, and basic needs for women and girls. The chapter explores the specific gender dimensions of the rights to food, clean water, and adequate housing and follows the interrelationship between the right to an adequate standard of living and other human rights. It Identifies the role of government, nongovernmental organizations, and women themselves in advancing the right of women to an adequate standard of living. The Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR) provides that everyone has the right to a standard of living adequate for the health and well-being of himself and of his family, including food, clothing, housing and medical care and necessary social services. The International Covenant on Economic, Social, and Cultural Rights (ICESCR) develops this right further in providing the States Parties to the present Covenant.
