On September 11, 2001, the World Trade Center and the Pentagon, two symbols of American political, economic, and military hegemony were targets of al Qaeda, an international terrorist organization of Muslim fundamentalists dedicated to holy war, jihad, against the West. Thousands died in the most costly terrorist attack in American history. Who were the perpetrators and why would they commit such an act?
