ABSTRACT
Blacks made enormous strides under Lyndon B. Johnson, both in the larger society and at the White House itself. Johnson embraced the Kennedy agenda on civil rights and other issues, pushed it quickly through Congress as a tribute to the martyred president, and then built on it in fundamental ways.
