ABSTRACT

The curriculum moves forward with exploration and practice. There is teaching to do-about confronting bullies, building an ethical classroom community, demonstrating a personal work ethic, and finding ways to participate in addressing more global concerns. Each presents unique questions about ethical behavior. Some will become obvious with discussion; others will emerge from creative thinking. The teacher’s job is to tap the intrinsic energy of students with experiential activities that challenge them, connect with their excitement, and promise to be doable by the students in a short enough time. A track record of small successes that build confidence for the teacher and the students is needed. It is no small matter for both to take on such an awesome task as expecting children becoming adolescents to tackle a course in ethics.
