ABSTRACT

At last we come to the point where most reform advocates choose to begin. That is, it is time to take a look at how the business of American government might look if it were premised on different assumptions. I want to reiterate my steadfast belief once again, however, that what follows has virtually no chance of coming to fruition fast enough to ward off impending social and ecological crises without an education system geared toward preparing politically awake and active citizens, a system capable of delivering what Montesquieu called “the full power of education.” Lobby for the curricular and instructional liberation of your neighborhood school first; grow some of your own food, walk to work, and take steps to be as sure as you can that what you consume causes no life to be held hostage to your comfort; and then select from any of the efforts relayed in this chapter to alter the political landscape of the nation. By the grace of God, humans possess an intellect through which to will a better world.
