ABSTRACT

Music has played a little-known but important role in the lives of America’s presidents. George Washington was an accomplished dancer, as were many American aristocrats of his time. John Tyler played the violin. Warren G. Harding played the cornet. Calvin Coolidge played the harmonica. Richard Nixon played piano. Other chief executives, such as Franklin D. Roosevelt and John F. Kennedy, showed an appreciation for music by hosting frequent concerts at the White House.
