ABSTRACT

The notion that Barack Obama is 'too conservative' belongs in the same category as the idea that he is 'too white'. Although the Far Right launched an aggressive attack on Obama, some of the worst denunciations against him came from the leftist wing of his own party, the very group one might expect to be his strongest supporters. Barack Obama will never be a progressive Don Quixote swinging his rhetorical sword at conservative windmills. Conservatives and liberals have learned different lessons from losing. In 1964, when Barry Goldwater was trounced by Lyndon B. Johnson, it actually launched today's conservative movement that culminated in the election of Ronald Reagan in 1980. Cultural conservatives are indeed betrayed by a Republican Party that gives lip service to conservative social and moral issues and then focuses on serving corporate interests. But few people realize that the Democratic Party gives lip service to liberal social and moral issues and then focuses on serving corporate interests.
