ABSTRACT
This chapter addresses the events leading to the final breach between the party and the movement. It focuses on broader issues regarding the political relationship between these two groups and examines trends that have developed over time. The chapter argues that the Glen movement's general support for the AKP in the past and its eventual rupture with the party has more to do with the pragmatism of the movement's politics rather than any 'wedding' and 'divorce' between Erdoan and Glen and their respective followers. Disagreements over the status of Cyprus emerged first, but increasing anti-Islam sentiment in Europe and the economic and political crises in Europe after 2007 made EU accession seem less desirable to Erdoan and the AKP. Tensions between the Glen movement and the Erdoan government sharpened considerably in February 2012 when a conflict emerged between the Istanbul prosecutor's office and the National Intelligence Organization (MIT).
