ABSTRACT

INTRODUCTION All of the chapters in this section deal, in one way or another, with semantics. It is possible to make a loose distinction between lexical semantics and structural semantics, the former being concerned with the meaning of individual words and the latter with the meaning of larger units such as phrases and sentences. Such a distinction is often blurred in connectionist research, but is roughly paralleled in the arrangement of the chapters in this section; the first two chapters focus primarily on lexical semantics, and the latter two deal mainly with phrasal and sentential semantics.
