ABSTRACT

June in England is plagued by the spectre of the phonics screening test which takes place this month. The main message, however, is that literacy and maths are tools that a child should learn to use in order to pursue learning in an area that interests them. June is the perfect time to begin transition work with the Reception children. Young children can easily develop anxieties about future events, such as moving to Year One, and a short visit to their new environment can allay their fears and actually make them excited about the move. The children are having some adult-led sessions, in line with the work suggested by the Power of Reading course. Some children quickly began to pick out tunes and the notes for ‘Happy Birthday’ were written out for the children to follow.
