ABSTRACT

This chapter explains how the routine of the day was changed as a result of staffing issues within the school. The school is finding it very difficult to have enough adults available for the maths sessions and therefore it has been agreed to move these sessions to 9.30am – i.e. immediately after the reading sessions. When moving to a more child-led curriculum, with child-initiated learning occurring for a large portion of each day, many adults become anxious about their role. When working in a child-led way, the adults know the children in great detail and they know when something is worth noting. ‘Multi-tasking’ is an essential skill for anyone working in a child-led setting. When working in a more child-led way, the children are constantly demonstrating their knowledge and understanding without the need for testing. Indeed, the non-fiction books have become increasingly popular and children have started to make their own.
