ABSTRACT

May, like April, is a short month in school – with the half term break and several bank holidays as well. The chapter aims to give space to look at how speech and language are developed throughout the year group, as a reminder that the children are at the earliest stages of their education. It provides detailed account of how the growing area has been developed with a simple guide for practitioners wishing to try this venture in their own setting. The chapter explains the two aspects of the children’s play: their child-initiated play and the play they pursue when completing challenges. Many children opted to use plasticine and the results were colourful and varied. The children were able to put their own individuality into the design. The chapter looks at a few of the challenges around the books that are being used this month, and how the children interpreted these.
