ABSTRACT

Facilitation can be understood as a process that enables music participants to harness the flow of their creative energy in order to develop and grow through pathways specific to them as individuals and the groups through which they are involved. An example of a facilitation strategy involves asking participants to breathe, relax and recall an early sound memory, perhaps the earliest they can remember. Rebecca Gross is a community musician who facilitates groups, workshops, choirs and projects for people of all ages in and around the North East of England. Leadership in the workshops is creating a space to meet each other halfway to create and shift. Effective leadership benefits from a certain amount of charisma and likeability, the ability to remain positive and calm in less predictable environments and a willingness to be open to one's own learning taking place alongside that of the participants.
