ABSTRACT

In an ecological perspective on organizational change with digital tools, this chapter helps to clarify the complexity of the ongoing coevolution of educational organizations and these tools. Governments are challenging K-12 school leaders to develop a future-focused vision for their educational provision. The chapter describes the leadership strategies developed by an inspiring middle school principal and successfully adapted and adopted by less technically savvy principals in their diverse schools is likely to be useful to other leaders. The leadership model pictured as a top spinning a central spindle of authentic relationships and powered by teachers' enquiry-based practice is also a central message of the chapter. Research on the nationwide initiative that scaled up information and communication technologies (ICT) professional development for K-12 teachers in the UK provided a clear contrast between a successful and an unsuccessful model of development. The contrast between the models can be interpreted within the Arena framework in terms of digital technologies.
