ABSTRACT
The chapter aims to set forth some of the methods which the beginner may use to discover the subject which he desires to make his own. Before, however, this exposition can be attempted it is necessary to set out certain axioms which will be assumed in that discussion and to note some dangers to be avoided. These axioms, like all axioms, be self-evident and the warnings seem superfluous. The axioms are concerned with general nature of a subject proper for historical treatment in the form of a monograph. In consequence the student on the track of a subject begins by formulating a brief description of it in which he will aim at a nicety of style, recalling the brevity and point of an epigram. It will be remembered that the subject was originally discovered by selecting an area for investigation and inhabiting it. The stock classes, traditional limitations, are the enemies of discovery, the destroyers of original thought.
