ABSTRACT

This introduction presents an overview of key concepts discussed in the subsequent chapters of this book. The book discusses various aspects of big data in the context of crisis management. It presents an in-depth discussion about social media and big data in the context of digital humanitarianism. The book aims to mining social media for effective crisis response. It explains the use of social media surveillance in disaster management. The book focuses on biosecuring public health and gives the example of Electronic Surveillance System for the Early Notification of Community-based Epidemics (ESSENCE). It addresses the topic of resilience and surveillance in crisis management, illustrated by case studies from Europe, the UK and New Zealand. The book examines the emergent intertwined relationship between resilience and surveillance in contemporary crisis management processes in a number of different settings. It also discusses monitoring a big data cyclone with illustrations from the Sardinian case.
