ABSTRACT

Yet enough has survived for us to be able to reconstruct at least something of the man and his policies. Since 0 livares first engaged the attention of C:inovas del Castillo4 and Martin Hume, 5 old pieces of evidence have been reassessed and new pieces have come to light. His character, his private life and his personal relationships have been examined in Dr Maraii6n's ambitious psycho .... analytical biography;6 and a number of detailed studies have brought certain aspects of his domestic and foreign policies into sharper focus. 7 There is much that still remains to be investigated-the formative influences on his career, his methods of government, the identity and the character of his advisers and confidants. But his ideas, his hopes and his ambitions are a little better known than they were; and a few more clues have become available to his statecraft and his policies.
