ABSTRACT

In 1992, fourteen years after completing the Bachelor of Fine Arts (B.F.A.) from Kutztown University in Pennsylvania, the author returned to school to begin working on her Master of Theatre (M.A). In the years between 1978 and 1992, she had a career as a graphic designer. Adjunct professors are paid per teaching hour, permitted to teach a limited number of courses at any individual institution, and their pay differs from that of tenure-track faculty and from college to college. The author was applying for adjunct and tenure-track teaching positions at institutions of higher education. According to BFAMFAPHD, an organization for artist academics who are struggling to find work while under enormous student loan debt pressure from attaining their degrees: The 2000 United States Census revealed that there are more people who identify their primary occupation as "artist" than as lawyer, doctor, or police officer combined.
