When poor young people of colour enter educational places they are often suspicious-with good reason. White, middle-class youth are usually imagined to be the prototypical inhabitants of educational sites. In this study one young man at Rosemary Gardens High School said that:

They want to catch you out man. They want to see if you’re on that level man. How good is your Afrikaans . . .
