ABSTRACT

This chapter summarizes the origins of the concept and its development from studies of particular population groups through to investigations of resilience among nurses. James Anthony, one of the first child psychiatrists to write at length about the topic of resilience and vulnerability, collaborated with Bowlby as well as Anna Freud in his early career. There are two types of writing on resilience in nursing: editorials along with articles discussing the need for resilience among nurses on the one hand and on the other various research studies that set out to measure resilience, compare it with other characteristics of nurses or improve it through various interventions. Most of this research is done by nurses though some is carried out by psychologists and some is by nurses working for psychology-based qualifications.
