ABSTRACT

Introduction On March 11, 2011, an unprecedented disaster was etched into history as the Great East Japan Earthquake, the most powerful earthquake ever to hit the country and which triggered a massive tsunami that took the lives of thousands and devastated the land on which they lived. The tsunami also resulted in severe damage to the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant (NPP) operated by the Tokyo Electric Power Company (TEPCO). An estimated 150,000 residents of Fukushima Prefecture were displaced as the consequence of both real and perceived risks of radioactive contamination.
