ABSTRACT

Multi-Tiered Systems of Supports (MTSS) are primarily designed to improve academic and social emotional performance. In a multi-tier model, all students are held to rigorous expectations, but they receive different and varying levels of student assistance. There are similarities between special education and how differentiation is assigned in tiered interventions. In a multi-tier model, an education team uses accurate assessment and implementation of empirically validated instruction intervention to inform a student's evaluation for learning disabilities. Monitoring the progress of a student receiving intervention gives the MTSS team a clearer picture of that student's progress toward both the intervention and performance in core instruction. Students should be engaged in content-focused instruction that meets rigorous standards and helps them grow academically. Developing a school culture requires belief not just in the students but in the teachers as well. Leadership is key to the success of MTSS.
