ABSTRACT

Social emotional learning (SEL) is closely related to behavior and should be included as a part of an overall Multi-Tiered Systems of Supports (MTSS) program. One approach that infuses a system of positive reinforcement is a Positive Behavior Intervention Support (PBIS), which includes a proactive plan to improve school climate and encourage appropriate behaviors for everyone. When students do not respond well to group-level approaches, self-monitoring systems allow a student to track personal improvements toward reaching the desired behavioral response. Praise notes are frequently written notes to a student that highlight the student's good behavior. Some students may not respond quickly to a behavior modification plan. Although this resistance is greater in reactive consequence plans, resistance may happen with positive plans as well. One way to teach social and emotional learning is to use literature. A character education program is designed to help students with not only SEL but also understanding of stewardship and social interactions.
