ABSTRACT

Cognitive therapies have long been the treatments of choice for addictive disorders. Within the last decade, however, numerous other models of therapy have come into the landscape of treatment approaches for addictions, especially sexual addiction. These therapies include the 30 Task Model, developed by Dr Patrick Carnes, neurobiological approaches based on the work of Dan Siegel, MD, and others, mindfulness practices, as well as many other approaches. This chapter explores approaches to treating sexually compulsive disorders with the emphasis being on facilitating neuroplastic changes in the brain, with the purpose of helping to ensure long-term sobriety and recovery. Basic theories of the specific models and clinical applications are addressed.
