ABSTRACT

Using the ideas and experiences of over 40 educational thinkers, from philosophers to psychologists, doctors to government ministers, the nine common themes covered in this chapter can be found throughout their writings, running like threads through the fabric of child development theory. The financial value of music-based tourism is now being used and recognised to calculate the national economic value that music holds. Music once held great value in education for its own sake. People unable to read notation or perform on instruments often identify musical skill as something they would have liked the opportunity to learn or develop. History has shown that music education has experienced a transformation. Understanding child development and how ideas have developed over time is essential in all teaching. This is because the ideas that we believe to be true are subconsciously expressed in our behaviour towards and expectations of our students.
