ABSTRACT

The Depth and Complexity Model is articulated by a collection of prompts designed to stimulate student inquiry or questioning and/or student responses to tasks affiliated with the basic or core curriculum. The greater the specificity of the purpose of the prompt or prompts within a designated learning experience, the greater the effectiveness of the prompt in focusing attention and providing a reference for purposeful teaching and learning. One means to ensure the affiliation of the depth and complexity prompts with subject matter is to integrate the prompts into the formation of a content-related and skill-related objective. The purpose of clustering prompts is to help students recognize the economy of learning by linking or associating the prompts of depth and complexity to each other or skill sets. The prompts of depth and complexity can be presented and applied in simple to complex settings.
